Lifting equipment – inspection:
Regarding recurring inspections of work equipment, the employer is responsible for determining the type, scope, and frequency of required inspections according to DGUV regulations, as laid down in Section 3, Paragraph 3 of the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV). Furthermore, the employer is responsible for identifying and appointing the persons and/or service providers to be commissioned with testing or inspecting work equipment.
Furthermore, the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV) requires that employers have work equipment inspected if it is subject to damaging influences that could lead to hazardous situations. The employer must have this equipment inspected by qualified personnel (experts, specialists) at intervals determined according to Section 3, Paragraph 3 of the BetrSichV and, if necessary, tested (Section 10, Paragraph 2 of the BetrSichV).
Technical work equipment and operating equipment may not be operated without a valid DGUV (formerly UVV) expert inspection and a certified expert assessment. Without a valid DGUV inspection, the operator loses all insurance coverage in the event of an accident!
At what intervals must lifting equipment be inspected?
As a general rule, all lifting equipment such as chains, hooks, eyes, shackles, ropes, and webbing slings must be inspected by qualified personnel before initial use and at least annually thereafter (more frequently if necessary). The inspection must be documented. Round steel chains used primarily as lifting equipment must undergo non-destructive crack testing at least every three years. This testing can be carried out, for example, by fluxing the round steel chain.
The operator is responsible for ensuring that the rectification of any defects identified during the inspection is recorded in the inspection report. The inspection reports must be available for review upon request.
What is checked on the lifting equipment:
- The general condition (cracks, fractures, deformations, etc.)
- Proper assembly
- The safety equipment
When commissioning qualified experts, in addition to their equipment and resources, their know-how and experience are paramount. The quality of this overall package is crucial for the quality of the inspection and therefore for the safety of your employees.
Transprotec inspectors possess the experience, expertise, and necessary equipment to conduct meaningful tests. In addition to load tests on mobile test benches for lifting chains, non-destructive testing for cracks using flux detectors is also performed as needed. The test results are documented electronically and provided to the customer both electronically and in paper form as a legally admissible document. Upon request, identified defects are repaired or replaced with new parts, taking cost-effectiveness into account.
Example: Chain inspection
Lifting chains must be regularly inspected for cracks. Fluxing is a non-destructive material testing method. We can perform the inspection on-site using our mobile fluxing device upon request. (The sample in the video showed no defects.)Who is an expert:
A competent person is someone who, based on their professional and product-specific training and experience, has sufficient expertise in the field of lifting equipment, hoists and crane systems, and is also familiar with the relevant national occupational safety regulations, accident prevention regulations, guidelines and general rules of technology (DIN standards, VDE regulations and technical rules of the EU member states) to the extent that they can assess the safe working condition of the assembly to be tested.
Who is an expert?
Experts are persons appointed as experts by the employers' liability insurance association or persons who are appointed as experts by their employer in accordance with the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV) based on their specialist knowledge and professional experience.
